When one thinks of tango, the flute isn’t the first instrument that comes to mind. In the last decade or so, a resurgence of instrumental tango music in Buenos Aires has been described as the “new" golden age for the genre, especially so for the flute, which was one of the original instruments in tango. After many decades of non-existence, the flute takes on a prominent role in the music offered here.
Featured is a new work by Exequiel Mantega, commissioned by Elena Yarritu, and the North American premier of his arrangements of Piazzolla's Tango Etudes for Two Flutes with flutist Paulina Fain.

Elena Yarritu heads out to the 2nd annual Silicon Valley Music Festival to perform Barber Summer Music, Messiaen's Le Merle Noir, Faure's Fantaisie, Andy Akiho's To WALk Or RuN in WEst Harlem, and to conduct Schoenberg's arrangement of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde.
